My R2-D2 costume was so fun for Halloween. One of my favorite parts was the headband I made. It was so simple and made for a fun accent piece. Here’s how to make your own R2-D2 costume headband.

DIY R2-D2 Headband Tutorial

Supplies

  • Foam Half Ball
  • Circle Template (optional)
  • Pencil
  • Ultra Fine Point Sharpie Marker
  • Paint + Paintbrush
  • Red Glitter Paint (optional)
  • Headband
  • Hot Glue Gun

Instructions

Step 1 Lightly draw a circle at the top of the half ball in pencil. A template can help with this if you have one.

Step 2 Add four trapezoid shapes just below spacing around like ‘flower petals.’ Then add another with a circle centered in it below one. (See photo in step 4 for reference.)

Step 3 Draw smaller vertical rectangles around the base of the half ball to finish off the droid helmet design.

Step 4 Trace all of your shape outlines with black Sharpie marker to define them. (If you feel like you’ve made a ‘mistake’ here – don’t fret. As you can see in the photo below, I changed a few lines as I drew in marker. I used my x-acto knife to lightly scrape out the extra marker lines. Once painted over, they were no longer visible.)

Step 5 Fill in shapes with paint or marker. I used blue paint for the majority of the shapes and thicker black sharpie for the larger circle.

Step 6 Add a bit of red glitter paint to one smaller circle detail (optional).

Step 7 Allow paint to dry.

Step 8 Finally, choose placement on headband and use hot glue to secure.

Completed R2-D2 Costume Headband

That’s it! Your R2-D2 costume headband is now complete and ready to wear.
