Disney Cruise Line has gifts for members of their Castaway Club (ie, return cruisers). We’ve ended up with a couple of tote bags on recent sailings. I really like their size and use them on the cruises as well as adventures at home. The only challenge on the cruises is others often have the exact same bag. Before our recent sailing on the Disney Treasure, I wanted a way to personalize our tote bag so it was clear it belonged to us. Using fabric from my stash, I made a simple bag scarf. It’s a fun little accessory and super easy to make. Best of all, you can accessorize any tote – not just a DCL one.
Supplies
- Fabric
- Coordinating Thread
- Fabric Pen
- Quilter’s Square
- Scissors
- Straight Pins
- Ball Point Bodkin
Instructions
Step 1 Cut two 26″ x 3″ rectangles from your fabric. You can use a single fabric for both or use 2 different fabrics like I did.
Step 2 At each end, use your Quilter’s Square to draw in an angle at 45º. Cut along these lines to create a trapezoid shape.
Step 3 Place your fabrics right sides together and pin.
Step 4 Sew 1/8″ in along all 4 sides. Leave about a 2″ gap in the middle of one of the longer sides. You’ll use this to flip the fabric inside out.
Step 5 Trim away extra fabric at the corners. Pay special attention to the points on each end cutting as much fabric as possible.
Step 6 Use the hole in the side to flip all the fabric through and turn the project right side out. Use a ball point bodkin to gently push the corners and points out. Then iron and press your seams.
Step 7 Sew 1/8″ in around all 4 sides to finish off.
Step 8 Lay your bag scarf face down and fold in the top and bottom so the center is in thirds and all edges hidden. Place at bag handle and tie crossing over and then carefully knotting. Adjust so the preferred fabric is visible and pointed ends face down.
All that is left to do is enjoy your stylish new tote bag!
