Dory!! Mama, Dooooorrrrrrryyyyy!

I’ve heard exclaimed many, many times the past few months by my 2 year old daughter. And, amazingly, she hadn’t even seen either movie Dory has starred in. That didn’t stop her from spying that well known blue tang wherever we went. No matter where Dory’s likeness popped up, my daughter was sure to find it and let me (and the rest of the store) know.

I guess Santa was in on this fact because he left a copy of the new Finding Dory movie in her stocking on Christmas Eve. When the time came to snuggle up and watch it, I decided to surprise both kids with a treat.

I filled a couple of bowls (in Dory blue and Nemo orange, of course) with snacks. Then placed them into a wooden tray from our kitchen so they could sit easily on top of our ottoman. And, since both were overcoming colds too, I also added a box of Kleenex® featuring Finding Dory I found at BJ’s Wholesale Club. They are limited time design so check here to see if your local store has them in stock.

Kleenex 2-ply tissues are soft, strong and absorbent making them perfect for little noses. Not to mention that my kids found the box design fun. (Me too! Do you think they’ll notice if I sneak off a box for my desk at work?)

I also brought down their pillows for extra couch snuggling fun and surprised them each with a new Finding Dory pillowcase I had made. Perfect to get us into the mood for our movie.

Can you find Dory on the Kleenex® box in the photo above?

All in all my movie night surprise was simple, but a big hit with them. My son keeps asking when we’ll do it again and both kids have been caught all over the house snuggling with their new pillows.

Instructions

Step 1 Measure and cut rectangles from all 3 pieces of fabric:

  • 26″ x 41″ rectangle from your main fabric;
  • 2″ x 41″ rectangle from your accent fabric; and
  • 9″ x 41″ rectangle from your band fabric.

Step 2 Fold both the band fabric in half lengthwise with wrong sides together. Iron along the fold line. Repeat with the accent fabric.

Step 3 Place the ironed accent fabric piece along one of the long edges of the main fabric right sides together.

Finding Dory Pillowcase: Accent Band Placement

Place the band fabric directly on top of the accent fabric. Unfold so that the wrong side is exposed. Pin the fabrics together along the long edge.

Step 4 Sew the fabrics together using a 1/4″ seam allowance.

Step 5 Lay fabrics out right side up. Roll the main fabric back toward the accent & band fabrics.

Gently roll until the main fabric can sit on half of the band fabric closest to your accent fabric. Now fold the band fabric over the roll so the two long edges touch. Pin together.

Step 6 Sew the fabrics together using a 1/2″ seam allowance. This will hide your earlier sewing in Step 4 and create a hidden seam along the entire band connection.

Step 7 Pull pillowcase fabric out of the band roll you just created.

Step 8 Fold the fabric in half, right sides together, so the open end of the bands touch.

Why did you require 48" of main fabric when you only used 26"?
    • Sarah Coggins April 27, 2017 at 9:40 pm
The main fabric is cut to a 26" x 41" rectangle. For the fabric I used, I needed 48" in order to have the pattern placement so the fish are swimming "across" the pillow. This also allowed for any shrinkage when washing/drying before sewing as well as any possible crooked cuts at the fabric store.

I thought that was the reason. I have been making pillowcases for all of the holidays & special interests for my grandson & granddaughter starting when they were little & they're 19 &16 now! (they still use them!) I make them for my 9 year old grandson now. That's how I know that the pattern is an issue. I try to find all over patterns because it looks "wrong" when the pillow is on the bed.

Yes! I learned the hard way making one of my first pillowcases for my son and bought fabric based on the tutorial - not realizing the patterned fabric I purchased required more. Now I err on the side of caution and list a larger size in my own tutorials hoping to help other avoid that mistake. What a treasure that you've made pillowcases for your grandchildren! I've made several for my son (this was the first for my daughter as she still isn't using a pillow because she' still in a crib). My son loves all of his special pillowcases still.
