Mother Gothel Costume

February 28, 2023 Sarah Coggins

A thrift store find led to a fun Disney Villain costume – Mother Gothel. Perfect for Halloween, dress up, or Book Character Day.

Simple DIY Disney Mother Gothel costume for Halloween or Book Character Day.

My daughter spotted this beautiful dark maroon dress while shopping with my mom. Per the tag, it was a bit large for her, but she convinced Grama to buy it. She has worn it several times since around the house for fun and even to church one Sunday.

When Book Character Day was announced for her school, it was one of my first ideas for a costume. The resemblance to the dress worn by Rapunzel’s mother in Tangled, Mother Gothel, was so striking. Paired with a dark, long curly wig and the look is complete.

I even managed to find a book at our library that perfectly fit the theme – Mother Knows Best: A Tale of the Old Witch (book 5 in the Disney Villains series).

Unfortunately, she decided she wasn’t too excited about this character so we changed directions completely (I’ll share that costume soon). It was still fun to see this come to life even if just for a few photos. It’s a good reminder to be open minded when shopping thrift stores or consignment sales and even with what is in your own closet. Quite often we have clothing that can be turned into a simple and unique costume with a small addition or change.
