Last week our daughter’s elementary school celebrated Read Across America with a full week of School Spirit activities. The week wrapped up with Book Character Day. When I asked if she had a character request, she told me she wanted to do what she did last time. I paused for a moment while my mind caught up with her thinking – she was referencing the Margaret Tiger costume she wore 2 years ago! While we still have the headband, the outfit is long outgrown and gone. It was time for a fresh, new to us character. Thus, the DIY Pinkalicious costume.
Inspiration
Thumbing though books in her room for a character idea, I came across one we recently borrowed from the library – Pinkalicious: Happy Birthday! Instantly I knew Pinkalicious was our winner. Our daughter has LOTS of pink clothing and we even own a costume wand that almost perfectly matches the one Pinkalicious is holding in the cover image.
Costume
Using the cover as a guide, we put together a Pinkalicious costume using mostly items we already owned – pink dress, pink leggings, and that fun star wand. I sewed a new mask from coordinating fabric in my stash and ordered a fun glittery gold crown headband. It was the perfect finishing touch.
Our daughter was so excited to wear her costume to school on Friday. When I picked her up that afternoon, she was bubbling over as she told me her teacher took one look at her that morning and greeted her as Pinkalicious. The perfect compliment.
