Project 52 Photos: Week 42 Fall - NC State Fair

Project 52 Photos: Fall

October 21, 2015 Sarah Coggins

One of our favorite fall activities? Attending the NC State Fair. Last year may have been the first year I missed it since moving to Raleigh in the mid-90s. Somehow having a baby tends to take priority over a lot of things. 😉

Project 52 Photos: Week 42 Fall - NC State Fair

This year, we attended for the first time as a family of four. Our son’s school had an early release day last Friday so we headed to the fairgrounds to spend the afternoon. We saw a few exhibits, shared a funnel cake (D’s choice), D rode several kiddie rides, and our daughter took it all in (plus had a little nap) all while cozied up to me in her carrier.

Knowing we’d only be there a few hours, I was trying to “travel light” which meant leaving the stroller in the car (smartest decision – far easier to maneuver with E in the carrier vs pushing the stroller through a crowd) and the DSLR at home. I did take our point & shoot camera which I used for most of the photos I took. However, one of my favorite is above and captured with my iPhone. Then edited in Photoshop. The sun didn’t peek through until late in our visit which made for a lot of “white sky” photos, but allowed the bright colors of the fair to shine.

Do you have a state (or local) fair that you enjoy attending?

Join in the fun at any time. Next week’s challenge is together. Find the full list on Sarah Halstead’s blog here. Thanks to Sarah, Amy, and Angie for hosting each week.

Thanks! I didn't get near as many photos this year and was pleased this one from my iPhone came out so well (plus a little editing in photoshop ;) ).

The last time I took my kids to our local fair I remember being nervous about all the rides they wanted to go on. They just seemed so rickety and hurriedly put together, and the men who operated them....looked more like convicts. I know I'm being a bah humbug, but that is how it felt to me. Plus, with a large family (10 children) it just is such an expense! The idea of a fair is different than actually being at one. When I think of a fair, I think of the ones I see on TV...with carnival music playing, cotton candy, and the crowds are mild. Reality is much different, LOL

I get a lot of your concerns and definitely approach it differently now that we have kids. This is the state run annual fair so that helps, but it's also VERY large which means things can happen. I'm pretty strict on our son being with us (he's only 6) and being cautious which rides he does. Before he was old enough, we never did any. In recent years there have been ride accidents. It has definitely made me nervous and cautious about what I will allow him to do. Case in point, he wanted to ride that ferris wheel and we refused. It was probably fine, but that's a height concern alone for me if something wasn't quite right. But as far as people watching, exhibits, and crazy food - our state fair is a great time.

So fun! I loved that when I went a few years ago.

Thanks! We'll have to get all 5 (!) of you over here one year to join us for a day there. It really is quite the experience.

What fun! Our fair is in August. We go every year, but only for tuff trucks

It's fun seeing the photos throughout the year of different fairs at different times. We'd all melt from the heat & humidity if ours was in August. Even in October though, the temps can vary to the point you might visit one day in shorts and the next bundled up in a coat!
