Project 52 Photos: Shadows

January 28, 2015 Sarah Coggins

Over the weekend we went downtown to the NC Museum of Natural Sciences for Astronomy Day. The day was pretty gloomy and overcast until we got to the top level of the main building and I noticed a bit of sun coming in through the glass dome over the Terror of the South dinosaur room.

I’ve been in this room many times over the years. Usually I take a photo from the lower floor straight up at the “flying” pterosaurs. But when I saw how the sunlight was coming in on the upper level, I headed to overlook to try something different and get my capture for this week’s Project 52 Photos theme of Shadows.

I loved how the shadows play on the walls and the windows plus that glimpse of the state Legislative Building and the American Flag. (Look real closely and you’ll spot a bit of the NC state flag as well.)

And, for fun – here’s another photo I took in that same room in October 2002. There used to be a plexiglass(?) floor in one area. It’s been covered over for years now. This particular visit I was with my brother & sister. My feet are at the bottom.

looks like an awesome museum, and the shadows look like textures against the walls!

It is a great museum! Only special events have fees. We've regularly visited for years even before kids. Now my son gets excited when we say we are taking him.

Thanks! I was excited to get inspired to rethink that room and how to photograph it. Got me out of a rut a bit.

These are awesome Sarah! Love the shadows in the 1st shot...but the shadow of the bird on the ground at their feet is amazing!

Thanks, Mitzi! I was excited to remember that older shot (and finding it!) when putting together this post. It was one of those quickly snapped moments with one of my first point & shoot cameras. Minus adding the watermark, it's SOOC.
