NC Theatre "Mary Poppins" at Memorial Auditorium

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious Evening

July 27, 2016 Sarah Coggins

Did the title cause you to start humming “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious”? It’s running through my head and the perfect description of our evening last night! The NC Theatre kindly hosted us, along with a few other members of the NC Blogger Network, for their production of the Broadway Musical Mary Poppins.

I had a “plus one” invitation so I took my son. I’ve been trying to squeeze in more one-on-one time with him and this seemed like the perfect opportunity. We chatted on the drive over. For once uninterrupted by a certain little sister, he had some good questions and I learned a few interesting things. We also realized that he’s never seen the movie Mary Poppins! I gave him a quick background so he’d have a general idea.

Mommy & Son Date Night: Mary PoppinsThe show is long – 2 and a half hours plus a 15 minute intermission. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t sure we’d make it to the end given it was late and on a school night, but he hung in there. When I asked at intermission if he wanted to return or head home, he gave me a tired, but enthusiastic “stay!” So we did. And, while there were a few wiggles and bouncy seat moments (he is just 7), it was obvious Mary Poppins captured him. He was on the edge of his seat leaning in to see better throughout most of the show; swaying and clapping with the songs; then standing and cheering loudly at the end.

This morning over breakfast he asked me if he could “have a spoonful of sugar” with his allergy medicine. It made me chuckle. He’s taken this medicine without issue for months! When I asked what his favorite part was, he answered “when they sang Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious all together.” He also really liked seeing Mary fly. That was pretty spectacular.

Mary Poppins marks the end of the NC Theatre’s 2015-2016 Season and runs through July 31st. There are tickets still available. Also, be sure to mark your calendar for the 2016-2017 Season. A number of great family friendly shows will be performed including Disney’s Beauty and the Beast next July!

Thanks again to the NC Theatre for hosting us!

So glad that you all came! It was great to see you again. My little man was pretty excited about Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious too! In fact, we had a sing-a-long around the dinner table this evening! Ha!

Great review! It was nice to meet you! Your little guy gave great feedback on the show and seems like he enjoyed it despite the length!

He did really well - I was surprised. Especially the next day when he still had more energy than me! LOL Great meeting you too.
